The local foods movement has grown leaps and bounds over the past several years. As people are becoming more aware of what they are eating, farmer’s markets, herdshares and CSAs(Community Supported Agriculture) are growing. So, where do we find a local farmer who sells produce, eggs, meat, milk, etc.?
Local Harvest just might be your answer! That’s www.localharvest.org. Here you will find any farmer or market that is in your area. Just enter in where you are from and what you are looking for, then the search begins. They will give you choices, usually from the closest distance to the farthest.
Of course, the farmer or market has to put their information in at Local Harvest for you to be able to find them. You might be surprised at what you find.
Another avenue you might be want to take is Home Grown Cow, www.homegrowncow.com. This is a relatively new site that works with the farmer on marketing their meat product. You can order through this site and Home Grown Cow gets a percentage of it and the farmer advertises for free. Not a bad little deal for both!
Of course, growing our own food is the best option for consuming local foods. But, there are some things we just can’t grow or do not have the room for.
I encourage you to eat local. Not only are we helping small farmers thrive, we are helping our communities become more self sustainable and our diets improve with healthier and more nutritional foods.
Now is the time to start searching for your local food possibilities.
