Feeling Overwhelmed and Discouraged?

Ever felt like throwing in the towel?  Waving the white flag?

From unending laundry, to a stubborn child who doesn’t seem to “get it.”   From an unhealthy marriage to a financial mess. From failing at something to feelings of unworthiness.

Do you ever feel like quitting?

You would give anything for a little break or blessing somewhere.  But all you get is a messy house, sick children and a garden taken over by weeds.

In the middle of all of the emotional mess and fussy kids, feelings of inadequacy creep in.  “What am I doing?”  “Why am I doing this?”  “It doesn’t seem to do any good.  I’m just treading water and not getting anywhere!”  “Where’s my break, Lord?  Where’s the silver lining?  I’m tired, so tired.”

Discouragement.  It can get the best of us!  But, what does it mean to be discouraged?

to be hindered; to be deprived of courage or hope

Yep, that pretty much sums it up!  But, let me ask you this.  Who is doing the hindering?  Who is depriving us of hope?  Are we doing it to ourselves?  When we get to the point of having an oppressive feeling of dread, of having no hope, of being hindered from having courage, this, my dear friends, is a spiritual battle!
Take heart!  All is not lost!  God knows the hearts of his people, for if you look in the back of your Bible for  the word ‘discouragement’, you will find the following words numerous times, “Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.”  Wow!  He must have known there would be those days where Satan tries to steal our hope and courage.  Without them, how could we persevere?
Let me share with you a verse that has helped me through some discouraging times.

David also said to Solomon his son,  “Be strong and courageous, and do the work.  Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you.  He will not fail you or forsake you until all of the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.”  1 Chronicles 28:20

“Do the work.”  Do you feel like your job as a homemaker is inadequate?  “Do the work”
Do you think that you will never get through to your teenage son?  “Do the work.”
Tired of failing?  “Do the work.”
Tired of farming?  “Do the work.”
Tired of running a business?  “Do the work.”
I think it is rather ironic that some leave out those three words when quoting this verse!
God wants us to keep doing our work, whatever that might be.  Don’t give up!  Don’t throw in the towel!  Don’t wave that white flag and let the devil prevail!
Sometimes we can become so discouraged that we just freeze and do nothing!  Do you have a big task that just seems so overwhelming and you don’t do it because of fear?  Yes, that’s right, you’re getting it, do the work!
What will happen if we keep on keepin’ on?  God promises that He will not fail us or forsake us!  Awesome!  If we know that our overwhelming tasks are what God wants us to do, then keep working!  Don’t give up!
Think of that old train going up the huge hill, “I think I can. I think I can.  I think I can!”
But, let’s change it to this,
Through Christ I can.  Through Christ I can. Through Christ I CAN!
Courage?  Yes!  Hope?  Yes!  Christ’s unfailing love?  Oh yea!

  1. Susie–
That was such a blessing and something I needed to hear today too!
I read Joshua 1 yesterday and four times in that chapter Joshua is told to be strong and full of courage. God knows we need to hear His voice and I'm so glad He lifts us up with those encouraging words:)
