How to Make Fried Mush

A true country boy’s breakfast!  This is what my eight year old requested for his birthday breakfast and I have to admit, they are quite good!  There is no need to buy the tube of mush at the store.  Making your own fried mush is extremely easy!

What is fried mush?  Water, cornmeal and salt.  That’s it.  Nothing to it.  Have a nice day.

Seriously though, here is the lowdown on fried mush.

Ingredients-makes about 8 servings:

6 cups of water
2 cups of cornmeal
2 tsp salt

Bring the water to a boil.  Reduce heat to medium and add the cornmeal and salt.  Continue to stir until the mixture thickens.  Put in a greased 9×5 loaf pan.  Most will tell you to refrigerate it overnight, which is perfectly fine.  But, if you are like me and decide that morning what to eat for breakfast, put the mush in the freezer for about an hour.  Remove mush from the freezer and slice about 1/4 inch thick.   Put 2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan and heat up. .Fry the mush slices until golden brown and slightly crispy on each side(approximately 2-3 minutes per side).

Top with maple syrup and enjoy!

  1. Love fried mush! didn't get it too often growing up, we ate all the cornmeal mush! 🙂 My Amish/Mennonite cookbooks suggest adding a bit of flour to the mush when cooking it up for a bit firmer slices for frying.

  2. I made this last month for my children. My eight year old son loved it while the others, not so much. I enjoyed it when I was younger and my grandpa would make it. He would always serve it with bacon on the side, yum yum!
