Replacing the Grocery Store Challenge Day 10 – Make Your Own Cereal

The high cost of cereal is a great incentive for us to make our own.  Plus, in our family, a box of cereal lasts all but two days!  On top of that is the ever increasing worry of genetically modified grains in the cereal.  Making our own is a healthy, easy and inexpensive way to keep us from going down the cereal aisle in the grocery store.

Day 10 Assignment – Make Your Own Cereal
Let’s start off with a very yummy granola recipe from the Amish.
Homemade Granola Cereal

8 cups quick oats
1 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
2 cups coconut                                                                       
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup maple syrup
1 cup melted butter
1/2 cup nuts
1/2 cup chocolate chips(optional) 
Mix the first six ingredients in a large bowl.  Stir in the maple syrup and melted butter to the mixture.  Put in two ungreased baking pans and spread evenly.  Bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes.  Then add the nuts on top of the granola and bake another 10 minutes.  Put in a large bowl and let cool slightly, then add chocolate chips if desired and stir.  Store the granola in an airtight container or ziploc bag(s).
This is by far better than any cereal you buy at the grocery store!  You can also make granola bars with this by pressing the mixture in the pan and not baking it as long, then it can be cut into bars.

Homemade Grapenuts

1 cup brown sugar
6 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup cane molasses
1/2 TBS salt
1/2 TBS baking soda
1/2 TBS vanilla
1/2 TBS maple flavoring
1/2 cup butter
3 cups buttermilk or regular milk
Put dry ingredients in large bowl except baking soda which should be added to the milk just before adding to the dry ingredients.  Add butter, molasses and flavoring. Then add the milk and baking soda. Lastly, put in pans and spread evenly.  Bake at 325 degrees until slightly crunchy.  Cool, break up chunks and put in bags overnight.  Grind the cereal, spread on cookie sheets and bake at 250 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring once.  Turn off the oven and let it set until crisp.  Store in an airtight container.
Simple Cereal

10 cups oats
4 cups wheat germ
2 cups coconut
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp salt
2 cups melted butter
Mix well and toast at 250 degrees until coconut start to turn brown.  When cooled, add 2 cups chocolate chips or raisins if desired.

  1. We're on Spring break this week so it's time to make some granola. I think we'll try the bars also. This is the 1st time I've seen a recipe with wheat flour in it.
