Over the years I have learned which gardening tools work for me and which ones don’t. In fact, I have come to rely on these tools so much that I would probably go into mourning if something should happen to them. If you have a husband that works outside of the home and can’t really help you in the garden much, then you especially know how important good gardening tools can be as well. It’s like a little reunion in the spring when I pull out these wonderful companions.
Sure, the kids come and help me at times, but I kind of don’t mind being in the garden by myself. It’s my little getaway. I hide there sometimes and escape the constant “Mommy,” Mom,” Mother,” “Where are you?” And I let out a little snicker, knowing they’re looking for me and have to deal with whatever it is they need/want on their own. It’s my little thrill of being slightly deceptive. Shhh, don’t tell.
I know you’ve heard of the saying “go big or go home.” Sometimes that’s me. And sometimes that makes me a glutton for punishment. My garden is rather large, about a half acre of homegrown goodness.

The Wheelhoe
I know it’s kind of big and awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will not want to do without. It keeps my rows looking nice and clear of weeds. Some of you might be thinking that by the looks of it, it should be in an 1800s farm museum, but trust me, it’s sooo useful for row gardening! Plus you get a nice little tricep workout while you’re wheel hoeing. The only drawback of using the wheel hoe is you’ll get some strange stares from neighbors, likely because they haven’t seen someone use it in their lifetime. They just don’t appreciate organic gardening…
I have been using the Earthway cultivator. But my next wheel hoe might be this smaller wheeled one shown below. Its a bit more pricey, but will last forever. Who knows, it might end up at the state fair pioneer village in 100 years. This is a must have attachment that I use all of the time for weeding in between rows.

If you are tired of bending over endlessly, planting each seed by hand and you have decent sized garden rows, then you will love the garden seeder. This is my other can’t do without piece of equipment. Basically what it does is plants the seeds and covers them up for you as you walk behind and push it over the rows. It’s a back saver I tell ya. It comes with seed plates with different hole sizes depending on what you’re planting. Plus it marks the next row while planting the current one. Pretty awesome! I use the Earthway seeder.

And there you have it. My three gardening tools for my half acre garden. Simple, yes! And they will last for years if you take care of them. I had to replace my wheel hoe and seeder when the horses got out and decided of all places to step, they stepped on my wheel hoe and somehow broke my seeder. But if you don’t have strange animals like ours, you should be good. Rock on with your gardening selves.
